The New Buckley's Tavern - Greenville, DE

A renovated Buckley’s Tavern opened in Fall 2012; however, my husband and I did not make a visit until a warm weekend in June.  We sat outside, but had the opportunity to see some of the indoor renovations.  The restaurant is much brighter now, more inviting.  It is a welcome change from the Buckley’s of the past.  Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the food.  I ordered the Vegetable Wrap with Sweet Potato Fries – something fresh and (hopefully) tasty on a warm day.  Well, all I can really say is that it was just OK.  The wrap consisted of grilled seasonal vegetables with pesto and snow pea shoots.  It wasn’t really anything to write home about.  The taste was just kind of bland – maybe it needed more pesto.  The sweet potato fries were standard – lightly salted.

Although I was not impressed with the food, I do plan on going back for dinner – the Macaroni and Cheese (and the Caramelized Onion and Fontina Flatbread) were calling my name.  Maybe I just chose the wrong entrĂ©e!

Kid Shelleen’s – Trolley Square, Wilmington, DE

Kid Shelleen’s is a local watering hole with a Western theme.  There is a deck on the side of the building, which is nice in the summer.  As you walk into the restaurant, you are immediately presented with the bar – large and taking up at least ¼ of the front room.  To the left, there are tables and booths for restaurant patrons.  Large screen TVs abound, showcasing various sporting events (of course).  There is also a back room that is a little better for dining – away from the TVs and rowdier patrons.

I went to Kid’s with my husband and some members of his family.  We ordered the Colby Cheddar-Jack Queso and Chips to start.  Unfortunately, the Queso was barely lukewarm when it arrived, but the taste was good.  It was topped with some sliced green onions and tomatoes, not spicy at all.  Very appropriate for people who do not like hot food or children.  The chips were standard tortilla chips – lightly salted.

Even though I am usually against ordering burgers at restaurants, I decided to go for the Black Bean Burger.  I ordered it without a roll, but with lettuce, tomato, and red onion.  It comes with roasted red peppers and Colby cheddar-jack cheese, but, unfortunately, they did not top mine with the roasted red peppers.  I ordered sweet potato fries as my side dish.  The burger was dry and tasted like a Boca burger.  I am not a fan of Boca’s products, so this was highly disappointing.  The cheese helped give it a little moisture, but I think that it would need a healthy dose of salsa (or roasted red peppers) to taste good. The sweet potato fries were OK, salted, sweet.  Pretty standard.

Kid’s has a friendly atmosphere and is good for a drink, but as for vegetarian fare, I’ll probably head elsewhere.

Gallucio’s (Wilmington, DE)

Gallucio’s is not far from our house and I pass it on most of my runs, so I’ve been wanting to try it for quite some time.  My husband and I ordered takeout one evening from the restaurant.  We shared an order of Sweet Potato Fries and I had the bar-size Vegetable Pizza.  Some of the fries were a little well-done, but overall they were done quite well.  The restaurant did not over-salt them and they were cooked through.  Overall, a good, crisp sweet potato fry.  The Vegetable pizza has a garlic & oil sauce, some seasonings (although I don’t know which ones), chopped broccoli, spinach, onion, tomato, and provolone.  The crust is pan – between a thin and thick crust.  I don’t think that it had enough seasoning, because I found it very bland.  I was pretty disappointed because I had heard how great the gourmet pizzas were at Gallucio’s.  I did add some crushed red pepper and that seemed to liven it up a bit.  There are other options, though, so stayed tuned for an update!
